Boot Camp Is Wrapping Up

It’s coming to a close. Boot camp. I never feared starting this six week, intensive crash course in writing and design. I also didn’t think I would be this exhausted at the end of it. Lucky for me, I manage my time well, so during the time our professors have given us to work on our last writing assignment, I’ve only needed to conduct one interview. The rest of the time I’m spending writing what I hope is my beat piece to date.

In graphic design, we’re designing a web site home page and four other pages for a not-for-profit organization of our choice. I’m still not sure which organization I’m going to do. I had two in mind, but one just did a redesign and the other already has a rocking site. Ideas? I’ll be researching and brainstorming on Wednesday night.

In other news, it has been bi-polar weather central here today. Thunderstorm or sunshine, the weather just can’t decide. A piece of advice for all Syracusians: walk tall and carry an umbrella … no matter what the nice weatherman on channel 4 says in the morning.

Magazine Spread

Our assignment this week in GRA 617 was to create a four-page magazine spread. We had to find a recent article from a magazine, search for high quality pictures, come up with a magazine and identity for it, then design!

I used an article from New York magazine about Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who is in (500) Days of Summer. The film opened nation-wide yesterday and I’m so excited to see it next weekend after summer school is over.

I had a little extra time at the end of lab yesterday, so I designed a cover.

A Start

I will never ask for payment for my thoughts. Not even a penny.

This will be a place for those thoughts, an insight into what I’m working on, what I’m doing, what I’ve seen, what I’ve learned.

Where am I now? Syracuse. What am I working on? Life. What am I doing? Attending Syracuse University, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. I’m working on my M.A. in magazine, newspaper and online journalism. I’ll be done in July 2010.

Just today I was was offered (and I accepted) a job as an instructional associate for the freshman introduction to graphic arts at Newhouse. I am so excited to work with the professor and the students, and also to continue my work in graphic design.

I’m also going to be putting together a movie investor’s brochure for Ryan Patch, an old friend of mine. He is trying to raise money to finish up the movie he made at the end of his undergraduate time at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. I’ll be working on that over the next few weeks.

Leave a comment if you have a question or would like to get in contact with me. Thanks for reading!
